Indianapolis — The Baltimore Ravens have announced their decision to wait for the results of the NFL’s investigation into allegations against their kicker, Justin Tucker, before determining his status with the team. Tucker faces accusations of inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions.
Ravens Coach John Harbaugh addressed the issue at the NFL scouting combine, stating, “That’s just really a tough deal. The NFL is looking into it. They’re going to review it. They’re going to try to gather all the facts.” He emphasized the need for clarity and evidence before making any decisions.
The accusations involve 16 women, as reported by the Baltimore Banner, with incidents allegedly occurring between 2012 and 2016. Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta expressed serious concern over the allegations, noting the importance of the league's investigation in shaping their response.
Justin Tucker has denied the allegations and currently faces no criminal charges or civil lawsuits. However, he could still face discipline under the NFL’s personal conduct policy if the investigation upholds the allegations. An independent disciplinary officer, selected by both the league and the NFL Players Association, would make the initial ruling, which could be appealed to Commissioner Roger Goodell.
This situation marks the first instance of Ravens officials, including Harbaugh and DeCosta, publicly commenting beyond a prior team statement. Harbaugh remarked, “We’ve all got questions, but nobody knows exactly what happened.” The Ravens might consider releasing Tucker based on the investigation's findings.
DeCosta emphasized the importance of treating each case individually, without rushing to conclusions. He confirmed having met with league officials in Baltimore and noted the significance of awaiting detailed findings before making any decisions.
Both Harbaugh and DeCosta mentioned separate conversations with Tucker. DeCosta preferred to keep his discussions private, while Harbaugh shared that he had a supportive call with Tucker, considering their long-standing relationship and Tucker’s personal challenges.
The Ravens were reportedly unaware of the allegations until contacted by the Baltimore Banner. Harbaugh expressed disappointment over such news, acknowledging the prevalence of distressing headlines and the importance of ensuring a respectful work environment.
Despite the allegations, Harbaugh clarified that the Ravens would have evaluated the kicker position this offseason regardless. He praised Tucker’s performance, highlighting his status as the most accurate kicker in NFL history, yet acknowledged the practical need for future planning.
