The Athletic is providing comprehensive live coverage of the 2025 NHL Draft. As the anticipation builds, I present my final projections for the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft. These predictions are my best guesses regarding what may unfold tonight. It’s important to note that while I may have insights into the potential moves of certain teams, the ultimate decisions rest with the select few executives of those organizations.
When discussing NHL Draft projections, I must emphasize that these are primarily educated guesses. At times, I possess information that hints at what specific teams might do, and I will share that information below. However, the reality is that no one outside of a handful of decision-makers can accurately predict the outcomes of the draft.
I typically refrain from commenting on trade speculation surrounding the draft, as I find that 99% of the time, it leads to unproductive discussions, with most rumored trades failing to materialize. However, I feel it is essential to address a particular point regarding the New York Islanders. There is a strong possibility that Matthew Schaefer will be their selection tonight. If he is not the chosen player, then the subsequent points I make will be irrelevant.
Recently, there has been a prevalent belief among fans, media, and even some within NHL circles that the New York Islanders might pursue a significant move to acquire another high draft pick to select James Hagens, a lifelong Islanders supporter from Long Island. I find this suggestion quite misguided and contrary to how a competent professional sports organization should operate.
Acquiring a major asset, such as a top-10 pick, carries substantial long-term implications. Decisions driven by feel-good narratives should never overshadow strategic planning in professional sports. While it’s conceivable that if the players on their draft board are closely rated, emotional factors could play a role, it’s important to remember that even if they were to secure another high pick, Hagens might not even be the player they have ranked highest.
With that said, I am excited to share my thoughts on how the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft could unfold. Stay tuned for live updates and expert analysis as we navigate through this thrilling event.
