The meteors appear to originate from the constellation Aquarius, which sits low on the southern horizon when viewed from the Northern Hemisphere. This point in the sky is known as the radiant point. Observers will have the best chance of spotting meteors in the predawn hours of July, as Aquarius rises due south and reaches its highest position in the sky during this time.
Shooting stars, or meteors, occur when meteoroids—small fragments from asteroids or comets—collide with Earth's atmosphere and burn up, creating brilliant streaks of light. The Southern Delta Aquariids are linked to a comet known as 96P/Machholz, which is approximately 3.7 miles wide (6 kilometers) and was discovered in 1986. This comet takes about 5.3 years to complete an orbit around the sun.
In addition to the Southern Delta Aquariids, the Alpha Capricornids will also peak during the night of July 29-30, contributing an additional five to ten meteors per hour. This shower is active from July 7 to August 15, and its radiant point is located in the constellation Capricornus, which is situated near Aquarius in the night sky. As a result, distinguishing between meteors from the two showers may prove challenging; however, the Alpha Capricornids are noted for their particularly bright, slow-moving, and colorful displays.
The Alpha Capricornids are the result of the 2-mile-wide (3.2 km) comet known as 169P/NEAT, which was discovered in 2002 and has an orbital period of about 4.2 years around the sun.
While Southern Hemisphere observers will have the best conditions for this meteor shower spectacle, those in the Northern Hemisphere can still enjoy the show. To maximize your chances of seeing these shooting stars, look generally south during the predawn hours on July 30.
