In a significant diplomatic move, President Donald Trump announced that he has begun making arrangements for a face-to-face meeting between Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine. This meeting aims to explore potential pathways to end Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Trump conveyed this information via social media after engaging in extensive discussions at the White House with Zelenskyy and European leaders.
“I called President Putin and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” Trump stated. He further added that following this pivotal meeting, a trilateral discussion involving the two presidents and himself would take place. “This is a very good, early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years,” Trump emphasized.
During his talks with Zelenskyy and European leaders on Monday, Trump noted that critical issues, including a potential ceasefire and the distribution of Ukrainian territory seized by Russia, should be discussed in a direct meeting between the two leaders. This dialogue comes shortly after Trump hosted Putin for a summit at a U.S. military base in Alaska, where he leaned toward Putin’s demands regarding Ukrainian land concessions.
“We’re going to let the president go over and talk to the president and we’ll see how that works out,” Trump remarked during the meeting. He and Zelenskyy expressed optimism about the prospect of holding tripartite talks involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of European security guarantees for Ukraine.
While Trump acknowledged the necessity of a NATO-like security presence in Ukraine, he refrained from committing U.S. troops to bolster Ukraine’s security directly. “They want to give protection and they feel very strongly about it, and we’ll help them out with that,” he stated. Trump insisted on the importance of finalizing a deal, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts with EU leaders.

Following his meeting with Putin, Trump suggested that the responsibility now rests with Zelenskyy to agree to territorial concessions that could facilitate an end to the conflict. “We’ll see in a certain period of time, not very far from now, we’re going to know whether or not we’re going to solve this or if this horrible fighting is going to continue,” he stated.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Trump to push for a ceasefire, emphasizing the need for immediate peace discussions. “I would like to see a ceasefire from the next meeting, which should be a trilateral meeting,” he said.
