At a recent press conference, Mayor Eric Adams made pointed remarks about Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, stating, “I still don’t know what he does, because it’s hard to really serve the city when you wake up at noon and then try to go out.” Adams further emphasized that Williams being his successor is the “top reason” he shouldn’t step down.
In response, Williams appeared on “Inside City Hall” and critiqued the mayor, stating that Adams is “doing everything he can to just stay as the mayor even though it is quite clear he can’t govern.” Williams added, “I think the problem is, actually, people are regretting (having) ever imagined him as mayor.” He highlighted that the mayor’s comments were riddled with inaccuracies and misinformation, which he claims are characteristic of the current administration.
Williams noted that he has to be cautious with his words, which is why he has never explicitly called for Adams to resign. However, he also mentioned being “very clear” that Adams should not be the mayor.
The discussion also touched on the recent resignation of four deputy mayors. Williams expressed his concern that the departure of seasoned deputy mayors could lead to a decline in some city services.
In addition, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams addressed the possibility of Randy Mastro becoming a deputy mayor, discussed New York City's sanctuary city status, and commented on Jenifer Rajkumar challenging him in the Democratic primary.
