Federal authorities announced their first arrest on Thursday in connection with the pipe bombs that were placed outside the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters on the eve of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The pipe bombs were reportedly placed outside the DNC and RNC headquarters on the evening of January 5, 2021, according to federal investigators. Constructed using 1x8-inch pipes, kitchen timers, and homemade black powder, these devices were described as viable and capable of causing harm. Fortunately, the bombs did not detonate; however, the FBI has emphasized that they could have killed or injured individuals nearby.
The discovery of the pipe bombs did not occur until the afternoon of January 6, amidst the chaos of the rioting at the Capitol building. Notably, former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was the vice president-elect at that time, was evacuated from the DNC headquarters shortly after the devices were found, highlighting the potential danger posed by the attacks.
In the months and years following the Capitol riot, federal law enforcement agencies worked tirelessly to identify and charge over 1,500 individuals allegedly involved in the unrest.
