A heartbreaking incident in Los Angeles County has resulted in the death of a school-age child due to a rare complication stemming from a previous measles infection. The county health department reported on Thursday that the child contracted measles as an infant, prior to being eligible for the measles vaccine. The recommended vaccination schedule begins with the first dose between 12 and 15 months of age, followed by a second dose administered between ages 4 and 6.
While the child initially recovered from the measles infection, they later developed a severe condition known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). This rare but devastating complication affects approximately 1 in 10,000 unvaccinated individuals who contract measles, but the risk increases significantly to 1 in 600 for those who catch the virus during infancy. SSPE manifests years after the initial measles infection and can lead to profound changes in personality and behavior, along with difficulties in speech and motor functions. Tragically, it often culminates in epilepsy and a vegetative state, with no known cure and a fatality rate of about 95%.
The situation has been exacerbated by a notable increase in measles cases across the United States, with 1,454 reported so far this year—marking the highest number since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000. Dr. Muntu Davis, the Los Angeles County Health Officer, referred to the child’s unfortunate case as “a painful reminder of how dangerous measles can be, especially for our most vulnerable community members.”
The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is extremely effective, providing protection against measles in 97% of cases when both doses are administered. Health experts emphasize the necessity of maintaining a community vaccination rate of at least 95% to prevent the spread of this contagious disease. Unfortunately, immunization rates have been declining across the United States, raising concerns about potential outbreaks.
According to the Los Angeles County Health Department, “Infants younger than six months are too young to be vaccinated and rely on maternal antibodies and community immunity to reduce their risk of exposure.” This highlights the critical role of vaccination not just for individual protection, but also for safeguarding vulnerable populations, including infants, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
