COVID-19 Cases Surge: New Variants Fuel Modest Summer Wave
COVID-19 cases rise in multiple states, led by Louisiana. Experts warn of new variants and conditions contributing to a summer wave.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the latest data from their time-varying reproductive number dashboard indicates that seven states in the U.S. are currently experiencing a concerning rise in COVID-19 transmission rates. Specifically, these states have reported a reproductive number (Rt) above 1.2. This number signifies that, on average, each infected person is passing the virus to more than one other individual, which is a clear indicator of increasing spread.

States with Rising COVID-19 Rates

Leading the list is Louisiana, with a reproductive number of 1.28, closely followed by Florida at 1.24. Other states exhibiting elevated rates include Nevada (1.22) and Hawaii (1.21). Additionally, states like Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama are hovering just above the 1.15 mark, indicating a sustained but slower growth in COVID-19 cases. This trend is alarming for public health officials as it shows that the virus is still actively spreading in these regions.

Wastewater Surveillance and Rising SARS-CoV-2 Levels

The uptick in COVID-19 cases is also reflected in wastewater testing. Nationally, the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater has increased by approximately 30 percent over the past month. However, the situation is more severe in the Gulf Coast region, where viral readings are reported to be about double the levels recorded in early June, according to the CDC’s National Wastewater Surveillance System. This increase in wastewater concentrations serves as a crucial early warning system, often predicting a rise in reported cases and hospitalizations by two to three weeks.

Causes of the Current COVID-19 Surge

What is driving this current rise in COVID-19 cases? Virologists attribute the increase to two emerging variants that are offshoots of the highly transmissible Omicron strain. The first variant, known as NB.1.8.1 or Nimbus, is responsible for 43 percent of recent cases and is characterized by symptoms such as a painful “razor blade” throat. The second variant, LP.8.1, accounts for 31 percent of cases. These variants, combined with soaring summer temperatures that encourage gatherings in air-conditioned indoor environments, a busy travel season, and waning immunity among individuals who did not receive last fall’s booster, create a perfect storm for a modest summer wave of COVID-19.

Recommendations from Health Officials

In light of the rising cases, health officials emphasize the importance of swift treatment for high-risk groups and strongly encourage sick workers to stay home to mitigate the spread of the virus. As the situation evolves, residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow public health guidelines to protect themselves and their communities.
