Remembering Arthur Folasa Ah Loo: A Celebrated Fashion Designer and Cultural Icon

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, a beloved fashion designer and an innocent bystander, tragically lost his life during a “No Kings” protest in Utah on Saturday. He is being remembered not just for his artistic contributions but also for his deep commitment to his Pacific Islander culture and his role as a devoted father. At just 39 years old, Ah Loo was the head of the fashion house Afa Ah Loo, renowned for dressing notable figures such as “Moana” star Auli’i Cravalho and cast members of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.”

The Tragic Incident

According to the Salt Lake City police, Ah Loo was “not the intended target of the gunfire” that resulted in his untimely death. Despite the lifesaving efforts of first responders, he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Auli’i Cravalho, in an emotional social media tribute, expressed her profound sorrow, stating there were “no words to hold the grief of losing” Ah Loo. She added, “Your artistry will never be forgotten; and neither will your peaceful protest. My deepest condolences, sympathies, and Aloha to his family, and all who felt his impact.”

Details of the Shooting

In the aftermath of the incident, two men associated with the event's “peacekeeping team” were detained. One of these individuals, 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa, was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a murder charge. Reports indicate that the peacekeepers observed Gamboa moving away from the crowd with an AR-15-style rifle, prompting them to draw their weapons and order him to drop the firearm. However, in a chaotic turn of events, Gamboa ran into the crowd holding his gun in a “firing position,” which led one of the peacekeepers to fire three shots. Tragically, one bullet struck Gamboa while another fatally hit Ah Loo.

A Life Dedicated to Culture and Fashion

Ah Loo, originally from Samoa, was celebrated for his vibrant designs that showcased his Pacific Islander heritage. His work gained widespread recognition after his appearance on the competition reality show “Project Runway” in 2019. Although he exited the show early, his designs received critical acclaim, gaining him a loyal following. Over the years, he dressed numerous high-profile Pacific Islanders, including Auli’i Cravalho and David Derrick Jr., co-director of “Moana 2.”

Auli’i Cravalho’s Tribute

In her heartfelt tribute, Cravalho mentioned that Ah Loo was responsible for the designs she wore at the world premiere of “Moana 2,” an event she described as “the most significant of my career.” She emphasized that Ah Loo’s creations are “thoughtful, elegant, and powerful portrayals of Pacific culture.”

A Community Pillar

In a series of Instagram stories, Derrick also honored Ah Loo, referring to him as a “pillar in the community.” He expressed his sorrow, saying, “I already miss you Uso,” using the Samoan term for “brother.” Derrick thanked Ah Loo for enriching their lives, highlighting the deep impact he had on those around him.

Creative Pacific and His Legacy

Ah Loo co-founded the nonprofit organization Creative Pacific, aimed at uplifting Pacific Islander artists and designers. The group had planned a fashion showcase for the end of July, reflecting his dedication to promoting cultural heritage through fashion. His passion for creating began in high school when he switched from cooking to sewing, realizing his true talent lay in fashion design.

A Devoted Father

Beyond his professional achievements, Ah Loo was a dedicated family man who often created clothing for his loved ones. He dedicated one of his September collections to his daughter, Vera, capturing his love for family and creativity. “This collection is dedicated to my daughter Vera. Dedicated to her and her free spirit and love for everything and anything creative!” he shared.
