Authorities have recently unveiled a comprehensive collection of records pertaining to the tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. This extensive release includes a detailed investigation report that sheds light on some of the last communications and internet searches conducted by Arakawa. Notably, these records reveal her efforts to find information related to flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques, signaling her concern for health issues leading up to her untimely demise.
Betsy Arakawa passed away in February due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare disease transmitted by rodents. Gene Hackman, aged 95, is believed to have died approximately one week later from heart disease, complicated by Alzheimer’s disease. The couple's partially mummified remains were discovered on February 26 in their Santa Fe home after maintenance and security personnel alerted the police upon noticing the absence of activity.
The investigation report reveals that a thorough examination of Arakawa's computer indicated she was actively researching medical conditions associated with COVID-19 and other flu-like symptoms between February 8 and 12. Her internet searches included inquiries about potential symptoms of COVID-19, such as dizziness and nosebleeds. In a concerning email to her massage therapist, Arakawa mentioned that Hackman had displayed flu-like symptoms on February 11 and had tested negative for COVID-19. She expressed the need to reschedule her appointment “out of an abundance of caution.”
On February 18, a significant health concern was raised when Hackman's pacemaker indicated an abnormal heart rhythm, likely on the day he passed away. In light of the couple's deaths, state health personnel conducted an environmental assessment of their property, discovering rodent feces in various outbuildings along with live traps. Although rat nests and deceased rodents were located on the property, no signs of rodent activity were found inside the couple's home.
The New Mexico Department of Health has clarified that hantaviruses are transmitted through the saliva, droppings, and urine of infected rodents. HPS is typically contracted through airborne particles stirred up during cleaning activities in rodent-infested areas or by consuming food contaminated with rodent droppings. Importantly, HPS is not spread from person to person.
During the investigation, officers discovered one of the couple's dogs situated in the bathroom near Arakawa's body. Upon further exploration of the house, Hackman was found deceased in a separate area. An officer noted the unusual separation of the couple within the home, prompting concerns about potential gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning. Fortunately, subsequent testing confirmed no hazardous leaks were present.
As authorities sifted through the residence, they reported finding no signs of forced entry or unusual disturbances. Tragically, another one of the couple's dogs was discovered dead in a crate in a bathroom closet near Arakawa, while two other dogs were found alive. A state veterinary lab attributed the deceased dog's condition to dehydration and starvation.
