As we delve into season three, episode six of The White Lotus, it's essential to tread carefully, as returning characters often face dire fates. A prime example is Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Tanya, whose storyline ended tragically. With the exciting news that Natasha Rothwell’s character, Belinda—the spa manager from season one—would be making her way to Thailand, my anxiety about her fate has risen significantly.
In this season, while Belinda has largely been a background character, I can't shake the feeling that her outfits might hold murder-mystery clues as we approach the climactic final episodes. After her harrowing experiences in season one, where she lost everything, Belinda’s re-emergence in Thailand brings both hope and trepidation. In Hawaii, she dealt with the grief of losing Armond, her manager and friend, while also coping with the betrayal of Tanya, who promised to partner with her in business but instead fell for Greg (or Gary, as he is known now), leaving Belinda behind.
Years later, Belinda finds herself in Thailand for a wellness study-abroad program. This setting allows us to witness a different side of her, free from the demands of needy guests like Tanya. Notably, during this episode, Belinda is seen reading a book titled Surrounded by Narcissists, which may hint at her past struggles and current dilemmas.
Throughout the season, Belinda has embraced the resort lifestyle, often opting for colorful linen caftans instead of her usual uniform. Her first night is marked by a heartwarming moment when she spots another Black couple at dinner, dressed similarly, and waves to them. The relief on her face signals that she is finally finding some comfort and connection.
Adding to her newfound joy, Belinda is developing a romantic relationship with Pornchai, a staff member at the White Lotus wellness center. He takes on a mentorship role, helping her acclimate to her new surroundings. However, even the social-media manager at Lilly Pulitzer, the brand behind some of Belinda’s outfits, has expressed concern for her safety, commenting, “Hoping she stays safe this season” on the White Lotus Fashion’s Instagram account.
Despite her vibrant vacation style, one particular caftan worn by Belinda caught my attention—it closely resembles the floral dress that Tanya donned in the season-two finale. This attire was seen as a foreshadowing clue to Tanya's tragic end. While I don't believe the same fate awaits Belinda, I can't help but wonder if her wardrobe choices in season three may carry similar hints.
Now donning her uniform again as she transitions into the “study abroad” segment of her trip, I am left contemplating whether this change signifies a shift in her destiny. In this episode, Belinda’s encounter with Greg/Gary becomes pivotal when she discovers that Tanya has died and that Greg is wanted in Italy for her death. This revelation shatters Belinda's blissful vacation atmosphere, and my concern for her safety escalates.
Belinda's confrontation with Greg/Gary at dinner highlights her growing awareness of the dangers surrounding her. The resort manager, Fabian, appears oblivious to the gravity of the situation, while Greg’s intentions remain suspiciously dark. When he invites Belinda to dinner at his house, she hesitates but thankfully declines the offer. It’s a moment that underscores the importance of being cautious when dealing with unfamiliar wealthy individuals in a foreign setting.
The question now is whether Belinda will fall into a trap next episode. Episode six has shown us that just when everything seems to be going well, trouble is always lurking around the corner, as evidenced by the Ratliff brothers’ antics. I am constantly reminded of the season's opening scene, where a shooting occurs, and Belinda’s son discovers a body, pleading for his mother’s safety. As a viewer, I find myself echoing that plea to creator Mike White: Please, for the love of all that is good, don’t let anything bad happen to Belinda.
