Spotify is taking a significant leap in enhancing the user experience by introducing a groundbreaking feature aimed at making playlists more professional and personalized. On Tuesday, the popular music streaming platform launched its new custom transitions feature, allowing subscribers to seamlessly integrate transitions between tracks in their playlists. This innovative tool is set to transform how users curate and enjoy their music collections.
The custom transitions feature enables users to either automatically add transitions between tracks or to customize their own using a variety of preset options. Users can choose from styles like fade, rise, or blend, providing a tailored listening experience. To begin using this exciting feature, simply open any playlist and select “Mix” from the toolbar to start editing your tracks.
While customizing the transitions, users can also adjust various settings such as volume, EQ, and effects. The feature utilizes waveform and beat data to help users pinpoint the ideal moments in each track for transitions, enhancing the overall mixing process. Spotify has made it easier for novice audio mixers by automatically displaying the key and beats per minute for each track, ensuring that even beginners can dive into the world of playlist mixing with confidence.
This new feature is particularly designed to appeal to playlist experts and music fans alike, who have collectively created nearly 9 billion playlists on Spotify’s platform. The rollout of custom transitions complements a series of other updates introduced by Spotify over the past year, enhancing user control over their listening experience. These updates include tools for adding, sorting, and editing playlists, customizing the genre of the Discover Weekly playlist, snoozing tracks, and even making voice requests to the AI DJ.
With the introduction of this feature, Spotify is positioning itself to compete more effectively with Apple Music, which is set to launch its own AutoMix feature. Currently live in the iOS 26 developer beta, Apple Music's AutoMix claims to allow users to mix tracks “like a DJ.”
Premium subscribers who gain access to the transitions feature can also save and share their newly mixed playlists with friends on social media. Additionally, users have the option to invite other subscribers to collaborate on a mixed playlist, fostering a community of music lovers. The mix can be toggled on and off at any time, allowing users to revert to a more traditional playlist when the party or workout is over.
Spotify recommends that mixing works best with tracks that have already been produced for seamless transitions, such as those in the house and techno genres, which tend to blend more easily. Furthermore, users can personalize their mixes further by customizing cover art and adding newly introduced stickers and labels specifically designed for mixed playlists.
The custom transitions feature is now available for the majority of eligible Premium users worldwide, with some markets in the APAC region still awaiting the addition. This exciting update is rolling out gradually and is accessible to users who have updated their iOS app.
