In a thrilling announcement for fans, “Severance” has officially been renewed for a highly anticipated Season 3. This exciting news comes just a day after the dramatic Season 2 finale of the popular Apple TV+ workplace thriller. What began as a niche sci-fi mystery with a devoted cult following has transformed into Apple TV+’s most-watched series ever during its second season run, according to the streaming platform.
Created by Dan Erickson and directed and executive produced by Ben Stiller, “Severance” features Adam Scott in the lead role as Mark Scout. The premise revolves around a unique procedure that separates Mark’s work life from his personal life. While Mark's “outie” grapples with the loss of his wife, his “innie” experiences a completely different reality behind the closed doors of the enigmatic biotech company, Lumon.
As the series progresses, it becomes evident that Lumon and its experimental severance procedure are far from what they appear to be. In the first season, Mark and his colleagues—Helly (played by Britt Lower), Dylan (played by Zach Cherry), and Irving (portrayed by John Turturro)—initiate a rebellion against the company by discovering how to awaken their innie selves in the outside world. Season 2 delves deeper into their struggles as they confront the unsettling truths about their identities beyond the confines of their office.
Alongside Scott, the impressive cast of “Severance” includes notable talents such as Tramell Tillman, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, and Michael Chernus. The series has cultivated a dedicated audience during the three-year hiatus between its inaugural and second seasons, highlighting its significant impact on viewers.
Before the Season 2 premiere, creator Erickson shared with Variety that “a lot is mapped out” for Season 3. He also mentioned that there is a clear endpoint for the series as a whole, indicating that the creators have a plan for how many seasons will ultimately be produced.
The executive production team, alongside Stiller and Erickson, includes Nicholas Weinstock, Jackie Cohn, Mark Friedman, Andrew Colville, Chris Black, John Cameron, Beau Willimon, Caroline Baron, Jordan Tappis, and Scott himself. The production is backed by several companies, including Fifth Season, Red Hour Productions, Westward, and Animals & People.
Stiller expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Making ‘Severance’ has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of. While I have no memory of this, I’m told making Season 3 will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”
Scott also shared his excitement, saying, “I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast and crew, Apple, and the whole ‘Severance’ team. Oh hey also — not a huge deal — but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.”
Erickson added, “The idea of getting to make more ‘Severance’ with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined. I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread, and malice with these truly incredible people.”
Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, praised the series, stating, “What Ben, Dan, Adam, and the talented cast and crew behind ‘Severance’ have brought to the screen is undeniable magic. We’re so proud to be the home for this brilliant series and look forward to audiences experiencing what’s in store for Season 3.”
As anticipation builds for the next chapter of “Severance,” viewers can expect more thrilling twists and profound revelations in the upcoming season.
