Rick Moranis is making a highly anticipated return to the big screen, stepping back into the comedic universe of “Spaceballs” with the upcoming sequel, “Spaceballs 2.” This marks the end of his decades-long hiatus from live-action acting, as he reprises his iconic role as Lord Dark Helmet. Alongside him, a stellar cast will include Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Mel Brooks as the Yoda-like figure Yogurt, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz.
Joining these beloved characters are new faces such as Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan, who will add fresh dynamics to this whimsical intergalactic adventure. Amazon MGM has confirmed the entire cast as production kicks off, sharing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the cast, writers, and director during a table read.
“Spaceballs 2” is set to grace theaters in 2027. The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, who is recognized for his work on “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” and “Will & Harper.” The screenplay is crafted by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. While the full title and plot description remain under wraps, Amazon MGM humorously noted in their official press release that “the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.”
Previous teasers hinted at a logline filled with Brooks-esque humor, describing the sequel as a “non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film.” Fans can expect the film to retain the comedic essence of its predecessor by poking fun at popular sci-fi franchises such as “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” and “Alien.”
Rick Moranis, widely celebrated for his roles in classic comedies like “Ghostbusters,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” took a significant break from the spotlight following the passing of his wife, Ann Belsky, from cancer in 1991. Although he had plans to return to the screen in 2020 for another sequel to “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” those plans were put on hold indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite lending his voice to characters since then, Moranis has not appeared in a film since 1997’s “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.”
At 99 years old, Mel Brooks continues to be a comedic legend, renowned for his work on classics like “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” and “History of the World: Part 1.” Brooks not only directed and co-wrote the original “Spaceballs,” but he will also take on the role of producer for the sequel. Additional production support comes from Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody, alongside Gad, Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter. Executive producers include Adam Merims, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.
As excitement builds for “Spaceballs 2,” fans eagerly anticipate the return of beloved characters and the signature humor that made the original a cult classic. Stay tuned for more updates as this fantastic journey unfolds!
