He reflected on the process, stating, “I read it and then they decided they were going to try to make it work out where I could do both shows, and then the other show got canceled.” This fortuitous turn of events led to Wendt becoming a fan favorite on “Cheers,” which aired on NBC from 1982 to 1993.

Just two months before his podcast appearance, Wendt participated in a comedy sketch at the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend in Kansas City, Missouri, alongside his real-life nephew, Jason Sudeikis, known for his role in “Ted Lasso.” Additionally, Wendt made an appearance at the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in January 2024, where he joined a memorable “Cheers” reunion featuring Danson, Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger. At a pre-Emmy party, Wendt was seen using a cane and receiving assistance from Sudeikis, highlighting the warmth and support of family during this time.
On Tuesday morning, it was confirmed that George Wendt had passed away peacefully in his sleep. A representative for his family shared a heartfelt statement with The Post, saying, “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”
Ted Danson expressed his sorrow in a statement, saying he was “devastated” by Wendt’s death and that it would take him a long time to adjust to the loss. “I love you, Georgie,” he remarked. Rhea Perlman also shared her sentiments, telling The Post, “George Wendt was the sweetest, kindest man I ever met. It was impossible not to like him.”
