Neptune is one of the latest entrants in the world of short-form video applications, aiming to carve out its niche in a competitive landscape dominated by major players like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. Currently in its beta phase, this innovative app has captured the attention of hundreds of thousands of users. According to the company, there are currently 970 active testers and an impressive 400,000 individuals on the waitlist.
On Monday, Neptune announced its plans to launch on the App Store next week, with intentions to expand to the Google Play Store within six months. This strategic rollout aims to maximize accessibility for users across different platforms and increase its user base.
Neptune was founded by Ashley Darling, a former talent director at the OPTYX agency, renowned for her work with “underestimated” influencers. Darling's vision for Neptune is to create a platform that prioritizes creativity over follower counts. In her words, “I spent years working with independent creators, both as an influencer myself and later helping brands. I kept hearing the same thing from creators and users, ‘I miss when social media was fun. When it was about creativity, not competition.’ So, instead of waiting for a platform to listen, I built one.”
With the future of TikTok still uncertain, Neptune aims to attract creators who are seeking an alternative platform to earn revenue. The app is designed to foster an environment that values the quality of videos and genuine connections over mere follower counts. Neptune plans to introduce multiple revenue streams, including tips, livestreams, and subscription options, providing creators with various ways to monetize their content.
Similar to its competitors, Neptune includes a discovery tool and a vertical video feed, allowing users to easily swipe through short videos and engage with others through comments. Additionally, users can personalize their profiles by adding a cover photo, a feature reminiscent of other social networking apps.
One of the standout features of Neptune is the ability for creators to hide their total follower counts and likes through an optional “ghost metrics” feature. This innovative approach is designed to alleviate the pressure associated with follower metrics, while still allowing those who wish to showcase their statistics to do so.
Neptune’s algorithm sets itself apart by emphasizing user interests and content quality rather than mere popularity. Traditionally, social media algorithms tend to favor content with higher engagement, often sidelining lesser-known creators, or “micro-influencers.” CMO Timur Tugberk stated, “We put the power back in the hands of the creators who actually built the internet. Not the corporations, not the algorithms. Neptune is for connection, not clout.”
Another noteworthy feature is the “Hop Back” function, which enables users to resume watching a video right where they left off, making it easier to navigate through content without losing their place. Although Neptune is still in beta and currently offers a simplified experience with just a video feed and search functionality, the company is actively working on enhancing its features.
Currently, Neptune lacks in-app editing tools and direct messaging capabilities. However, the company has announced plans to introduce a livestream feature, the ability to create playlists, and music integrations in the near future. These upcoming enhancements will further solidify Neptune's position as a compelling alternative in the short-form video app market.
As it prepares for launch, Neptune is poised to become a significant player in the social media landscape, offering a fresh perspective on creativity and community for content creators and users alike.
