In an exciting move for fans of the franchise, Nintendo has opted for a fresh approach with the first Mario Kart game for the Switch 2. Instead of following the traditional numbered sequels, the company has chosen to name this anticipated title Mario Kart World. This decision reflects the development team's ambition to modernize the beloved series, marking it as the most high-profile launch title for the Switch 2 and the first new game in nearly a decade.
During a private hands-on event held in New York, WIRED had the opportunity to spend several hours exploring the game’s diverse single and multiplayer modes, which include its Knockout Tour, battle modes, and expansive open areas. Although this experience didn’t allow for a complete review, our time with Mario Kart World provided a promising glimpse into what the Switch 2 has to offer at launch.
The most significant innovation in Mario Kart World is its interconnected world map, known as Free Roam. This feature allows players to explore every part of the vibrant game world, venturing beyond traditional race tracks. Gamers can traverse various environments, from sunny beaches to snowy mountains, engaging in off-road adventures or sticking to paved roads. Scattered throughout this expansive world are hidden challenges and unlockables, including drive-throughs that grant characters new outfits, enhancing the exploration experience.
Producer Kosuke Yabuki shared insights into the development process during the event. He explained that the team focused on building a network of racing routes across the world, ensuring that each path is enjoyable and engaging. “We had to consider each route individually to guarantee it offers value and fun, no matter which direction players choose,” Yabuki emphasized. The design process included creating a variety of routes, from major highways to smaller forest trails, giving players the freedom to explore.
While Mario Kart World offers players the freedom to roam, the core racing mechanics remain straightforward. Newcomers can easily grasp the basics, simply pressing a button to accelerate. However, seasoned players can master advanced techniques such as wall grinding and jump-boosting to gain an edge against their competitors. The game features larger competitions, accommodating up to 24 players in a single race, doubling the previous limit of 12. This change adds a layer of chaos and excitement, making victories feel hard-earned.
For those who prefer a different kind of rivalry, Mario Kart World also includes familiar battle modes, such as balloon popping. Players must strategically attack others' balloons while protecting their own, adding a layer of fun to the competition. However, the standout feature is undoubtedly the Knockout Tour, a thrilling elimination race where players must place well to remain in the game. This mode introduces a sense of urgency that elevates the stakes, ensuring every moment counts.
With the potential for extensive online play, Mario Kart World aims to leverage the Switch 2's GameChat and camera options, provided players have access to the compatible hardware. As the launch approaches, there are concerns regarding the impact of tariffs and whether retailers will have sufficient stock to meet high demand. The availability of the Switch 2, along with Mario Kart World and its accessories, remains uncertain as the new platform prepares to debut this Thursday.
