This week has been filled with intriguing teasers, including cryptic lyrics, mysterious billboards, and Mick Fleetwood reflecting on “Frozen Love” while listening to his headphones. Fans of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks can finally rejoice, as the wait is over: their iconic 1973 album, Buckingham Nicks, will be reissued on September 19. This marks the first time the beloved album from the longtime Fleetwood Mac bandmates and exes has been available in decades.
The reissue of Buckingham Nicks is particularly special as it has been meticulously sourced from the original analog tapes and will be pressed on vinyl in a variety of colors. Fans can already preview the remastered opening track, “Crying in the Night,” which was released as a teaser on September 5, 1973. The original album failed to gain traction upon its release, leading to their dismissal from Polydor Records. Following the album's initial flop, Nicks found herself working at a Beverly Hills restaurant named Clementine’s, until fate intervened. Their producer, Keith Olsen, played the album for Mick Fleetwood, which ultimately changed the course of their careers.
In exclusive liner notes for the reissue, Nicks shared her thoughts with Rolling Stone contributor David Fricke, emphasizing the duo's undeniable chemistry: “We knew what we had as a duo, two songwriters that sang really well together. And it was a very natural thing, from the beginning.” Buckingham echoed her sentiments, stating, “It stands up in a way you hope it would, by these two kids who were pretty young to be doing that work.”
The Buckingham Nicks (Rhino High Fidelity) reissue will be limited to just 5,000 copies, with a special edition of 2,000 copies that includes replicas of two 7-inch singles: “Crying in the Night” b/w “Stephanie” and “Don’t Let Me Down Again” b/w “Races Are Run.” In addition to the vinyl release, the album will be available digitally and on CD through select retailers, ensuring fans can enjoy the music in their preferred format.
Back in December 2012, Buckingham and Nicks discussed the possibility of a tour to celebrate the album, a dream that fans have long held onto. They conducted separate interviews with Rolling Stone, where Nicks revealed that they had recently unearthed an outtake from the original 1973 album that had gone unnoticed for years. “Next year is the 40th anniversary of Buckingham Nicks, and we’re hoping next year to get the record out,” she stated. “People have been waiting forever. Fleetwood Mac is totally good with us doing that. They know.”
Nicks also hinted at the potential for a tour featuring musicians who contributed to the original album, including her longtime guitarist Waddy Wachtel and drummer Jim Keltner. “We would actually go onstage and do the complete Buckingham Nicks album… It would be trippy for Lindsey and I to revisit those songs,” she expressed. Buckingham agreed but highlighted logistical challenges due to their commitments with Fleetwood Mac. “If you’re going to do it, do it properly,” he advised.
