Jillian Shriner, an author and the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was involved in a dramatic incident with law enforcement that led to her being shot and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). This alarming event took place on Tuesday afternoon in the East LA neighborhood of Eagle Rock.
According to an LAPD news release, officers were attempting to track a suspect linked to an unrelated hit-and-run when they entered the rear yard of a nearby residence. During this operation, they observed a woman, later identified as Jillian Shriner, who was armed with a handgun in a neighboring residence.
The officers issued multiple commands for Shriner to drop her weapon; however, she reportedly refused to comply. The situation escalated when she pointed the handgun at the officers, prompting what the LAPD described as an Officer-Involved Shooting. Shriner was struck by gunfire during this exchange and subsequently fled into her home. She later exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.
CNN has reached out to representatives for Jillian Shriner and Weezer for comments regarding the situation, but no statements have been released as of yet. A representative from the LAPD was unable to clarify the circumstances surrounding why Shriner was armed, especially since she had no apparent connection to the hit-and-run incident that prompted police involvement.
Authorities recovered a 9-millimeter firearm from Shriner's home during their investigation. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were injured in this tense encounter.
Video footage captured by CNN affiliate KCBS/KCAL shows two women exiting a home with their hands raised. At one point, one of the women, believed to be Jillian Shriner, is seen lying face down on the ground before being handcuffed by police officers nearby. Additional aerial footage from CNN affiliate KABC displays Shriner walking slowly while being assisted by medics toward an ambulance.
Following the incident, Jillian Shriner was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. It remains unclear whether she has been released to a jail facility or is still undergoing medical treatment. Publicly available arrest records indicate that her bail has been set at $1 million.
Meanwhile, one male suspect connected to the hit-and-run was detained but later released by the California Highway Patrol. However, two other suspects connected to the incident remain at large, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding this chaotic situation.
As the investigation continues, further updates are expected regarding both the police encounter involving Jillian Shriner and the ongoing search for the remaining hit-and-run suspects.
