The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is set to distribute more than $126 million in refunds to Fortnite players who were charged for in-game items they did not want. This initiative is part of a significant settlement from 2023 with Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite, which faced allegations of employing deceptive practices to mislead players into making unwanted purchases. The FTC made the announcement in a press release on Wednesday, revealing the details of the refund process.
The total settlement amount reached by Epic Games and the FTC is a staggering $245 million, which also addresses complaints from parents regarding unauthorized charges made by their children. In December, the FTC previously issued $72 million in refunds, and now, they are preparing to distribute nearly 1 million additional payments via checks and PayPal between June 25 and 26. This recent announcement elevates the total refunds related to Epic's deceptive billing practices to nearly $200 million.
The FTC has emphasized that they will never ask individuals to pay money or provide sensitive account information to receive a refund. It is essential for recipients of checks to cash them within 90 days and to redeem PayPal refunds within 30 days to avoid forfeiting the funds.
