In a hilarious turn of events on Saturday Night Live, comedian Colin Jost finally got his chance to retaliate against Michael Che for a vulgar joke that Che made about Jost's wife, Scarlett Johansson, back in December. The comedic exchange took place during the popular segment known as “Weekend Update,” where the two comedians engage in a playful joke swap with one another.
As the segment unfolded, Che took a moment to apologize for his previous remarks, which had drawn significant backlash. “You know, before I tell another joke, I want to take this opportunity to apologize to someone I hurt,” Che stated before introducing Johansson to the stage. He continued, “You know, last time we did Joke Swap, I made Colin do some tasteless jokes comparing your vagina to Costco roast beef.”
Che's forced apology didn’t stop there. He humorously confessed, “The fact is, I was just lashing out because I’m jealous. I’ve never even seen a human vagina.” He then added a comical twist, “Because I once spent the summer on a farm.” In a moment of self-deprecating humor, Che further revealed, “Maybe I’m just embarrassed about my own body. I can’t even take my hoodie off during sex because I have more nipples than a pregnant dog.” Johansson responded with a knowing smile, saying, “Yes, I have heard that about you.”
In December's holiday edition of SNL, Jost was subjected to several jokes targeting Johansson's age, their family life, and their sex life. The most shocking joke came at the end of the segment when Jost remarked, “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu, but I ain’t tripping. I be eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.” The camera quickly panned to Johansson, who was backstage, visibly shocked and exclaiming, “Oh my god! Holy s*.”
Jost, attempting to lighten the mood, concluded the segment with, “Naw, I’m just playing, baby. You know I don’t go downtown.” Reflecting on this jaw-dropping moment in a March interview with InStyle, Johansson expressed her disbelief at the vulgarity of the jokes. “It was so vulgar. I just can't believe that they went there. I was like — it was so gross. It was really gross. And, like, old-school gross,” she stated.
Despite being warned about a potential “vagina joke,” Johansson didn’t expect it to be aimed directly at her. “I was like, ‘I mean, it's a vagina joke, how bad could it be?’ And then as soon as the Costco photo came up, I was like, No! No, Michael!’” She recounted her backstage reaction, saying, “They were waiting for me to react. I felt insane. I was like, ‘I think I'm going to faint.’”
Johansson further described the intensity of the moment, likening it to a To Catch a Predator-style reveal, stating, “All of a sudden, it was like a whole bunch of people holding up lights, and a guy with a video camera.”
