US singer Chris Brown has been released on bail by a London court following charges related to an alleged unprovoked attack at a nightclub in 2023. The Grammy-winning artist, who has not yet been required to enter a plea, will be able to proceed with his world tour as planned next month, as stipulated by his bail conditions.
Brown was arrested last week and subsequently charged with grievous bodily harm after an incident where he allegedly assaulted a music producer using a tequila bottle at the Tape nightclub in London's upscale Mayfair district. The 36-year-old singer did not attend the bail hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, where Judge Tony Baumgartner mandated that Brown pay a £5 million security fee to the court.
The security fee serves as a financial guarantee to ensure that the defendant will return to court as required. Should Brown violate any bail conditions, he risks forfeiting this amount. Following his arrest in Salford the previous Thursday, Brown was initially denied bail on Friday but was granted bail on Wednesday after meeting certain financial conditions.
As part of his bail agreement, Brown must pay £4 million immediately, with an additional £1 million due within seven days. His upcoming tour is set to kick off in Amsterdam on June 8, followed by performances in major cities including Manchester, London, Cardiff, Birmingham, and Glasgow throughout June and July.
The two-time Grammy winner is celebrated for his chart-topping hits such as "Loyal," "Run It," and "Under the Influence." He is scheduled to make a court appearance on June 20, which coincides with his tour dates at Cardiff's Principality Stadium and London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Judge Baumgartner has outlined several bail conditions for Brown, including the surrender of his passport unless he is traveling for his tour. Other stipulations require him to reside at a specific address known to the court, refrain from contacting the alleged victim, avoid visiting the Tape nightclub, and not apply for any international travel documents.
Chris Brown will also appear in court next month alongside his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, a 38-year-old artist known as HoodyBaby, who is also from the United States. The developments in this case continue to attract significant media attention, particularly given Brown's high-profile status in the music industry.
