Sony is marking the 20th anniversary of God of War with a host of exciting goodies inspired by the digital realms of Norse mythology. This celebration not only includes a showcase at an LA art studio but also caters to fans with a nostalgic twist involving your dusty old record player. The highlight of this anniversary celebration is the unveiling of Kratos' stunning Dark Odyssey skin, a striking addition for players who have enjoyed the series over the past two decades.
In a nod to the franchise's rich history, the Dark Odyssey skin was originally unlockable in God of War II after hours of intense gameplay on the game's hardest mode. However, for players in 2025, simply owning a copy of God of War: Ragnarök will grant access to this coveted skin. Scheduled for a free update on March 20 for all players on PlayStation and PC, this update includes Kratos' shadowy black and gold look, along with Dark Odyssey-themed armor, weapons, shields, and more for the iconic characters: the Ghost of Sparta, Atreus, and Freya.
It’s important to note that players hoping to deck out their arsenal with the Dark Odyssey weapon skins will need to fully upgrade each weapon to access these new skins. Additionally, Santa Monica Studio is enhancing the gameplay experience by introducing the ability to edit the appearance of weapon attachments and shield rönd, allowing for even more customization.
The 20th-anniversary celebration wouldn't be complete without a plethora of exclusive God of War merchandise. Fans can look forward to a new set of art prints, including stunning designs such as the one created by Ollie Hoff. Furthermore, a two-volume retrospective book set will chronicle the franchise's evolution since its inception in 2005. Music enthusiasts will also be thrilled with a 13-LP soundtrack set, featuring two decades of Kratos' iconic, skull-bashing scores. Notably, collectors can now order double LP soundtracks for the Greek trilogy games for the very first time.
No God of War collection would be complete without the impressive 67-inch Jörmungandr, which features a magnetized tongue to hold a removable Leviathan Axe. While there is no companion Kratos plush, we can only assume he met a fate befitting his fierce character in this timeline.
If you're in Southern California, don't miss the chance to visit the God of War exhibit at Gallery Nucleus in LA. This exhibition, running from March 15 to 23, will showcase new artwork inspired by the beloved franchise, alongside concept art and unique memorabilia that fans will surely appreciate.
For those new to the God of War franchise or curious about Kratos' journey, there’s good news! PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra members can access his last three adventures — God of War Ragnarök, God of War (2018), and God of War III Remastered — through the game catalog. Additionally, PC gamers can take advantage of discounted prices for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök on Steam, available for just $20 and $48, respectively.
