Legendary musician Bruce Springsteen recently opened up about the emotional experience of watching his biopic, “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” come to life. In a candid conversation with Rolling Stone, he shared insights into how the film, which depicts the creation of his iconic 1982 album “Nebraska,” has affected him personally. Springsteen acknowledged that he sometimes found himself avoiding certain “deeply personal” scenes while visiting the set.
The film “Deliver Me From Nowhere” stars Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in “The Bear,” as a younger version of Springsteen. This biopic not only chronicles the making of the “Nebraska” album but also explores a pivotal time in Springsteen’s life when he was reconciling his newfound success with the challenges of his past. The album is regarded as one of his most enduring works, capturing the essence of his artistry.
During the interview, Springsteen was asked about his observations of another actor portraying him. He humorously remarked, “I’m sure it’s much worse for the actor than for me.” He praised White for being exceptionally tolerant on the days Springsteen visited the set, stating, “Look, anytime I’m in the way, just give me the look and I’m on my way home.” His presence was met with kindness from the cast, making the experience enjoyable for him.
Despite the enjoyment, Springsteen admitted that watching the film unfold was not without its challenges. He described the biopic as involving some of the “most painful days” of his life. To ensure the actors could perform without any distractions, he sometimes opted to stay home during the filming of particularly personal scenes. “If there was a scene coming up that was sometimes really deeply personal, I wanted the actors to feel completely free,” he explained.
Springsteen also shared the logistical challenges he faced during the production. He was on tour in Canada for the first month of filming, which limited his availability to be present on set. “If Scott Cooper, the director, wanted or needed me there for something, I would try to make it,” he said, highlighting his commitment to both his music career and the filmmaking process.
The anticipation for “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” continues to build as the film released its first trailer on Wednesday. Set to hit theaters on October 24, the movie features an impressive cast alongside White, including Jeremy Strong as Jon Landau, Springsteen’s manager; Stephen Graham as his father, Douglas; Paul Walter Hauser as recording engineer Mike Batlan; and Odessa Young as Springsteen’s love interest, Faye. Other notable cast members include Marc Maron, Johnny Cannizzaro, Harrison Gilbertson, David Krumholtz, and Chris Jaymes.
As fans eagerly await the film’s release, Springsteen’s reflections provide a poignant glimpse into the journey of creating a biopic that not only tells his story but also honors his legacy.
